Welcome to the Peer Support Training Institute Web Site

Providing Specialized Peer Support Training Programs for Police Officers and other Public Safety Personnel Since 1990.

Our Mission

The Peer Support Training Institute seeks to help police officers and other public safety personnel reduce stress and diminish the negative emotional effects of this occupation. Through the use of peer support, programs such as The Members Assistance Program of the New York City Police Unions (MAP) have reduced the rate of police officer suicide and increased the level of acceptance for mental health services. In 2001, MAP became POPPA, Police Organization Providing Peer Assistance,

Institute Profile

The Peer Support Training Institute is a division of Manhattan Counseling and Psychotherapy Associates, LLC, a partnership of licensed psychotherapists and educators.

PSTI, established in 1990, is a privately owned organization specializing in the design and delivery of peer support programs. We have trained approximately 500 police officers in the skills of police peer support. Our program exceeds the guidelines for peer support training established by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Psychological Services Section.

Here are some unsolicited comments we have received from our trainees:

  • "This is the best training I have ever received".
  • "The trainers are very thorough and they really know their material."
  • "I hated doing those role plays in training, but now that I am doing the actual work, I realize they were right on the money."
  • "When I met my first suicidal cop, I knew just what to do to help him."
  • "This training saves lives."
  • "Based on my experiences in this training, if I encounter a troubled co-worker, I will be able to actively listen and make a referral as needed."

"[This training]...really helps make a difference in the lives of many of New York's Finest. I believe this has been most notably exhibited through the numerous, documented suicides that were prevented through the Peer Support Team."
    - Walter L. McCaffrey, NYC Council Member
